You know what it's like, there's that thing you want to do. Maybe you want to talk to someone you're attracted to. You have a job interview. Or maybe you're just meeting new people you really like and want them to like you.
You feel anxious and depending on how server you'll get some kind of symptoms, like your heart thumping against your chest so loud you're sure everyone can hear it. Or maybe just a feeling in your gut accompanied by anxious thoughts of how you'll screw up.
What ever it is, if you are afraid of that feeling, you'll avoid situations that could serve you in your life. Even if the anxiety is just a small amount, you'll avoid it because it's uncomfortable. You'll have a fear of feeling anxious, or a fear of fear.
You avoid it because it feels bad. Or that's what you think anyway. It's a horrible feeling, right?
Well here's the thing. What's the difference between anxiety and excitement in terms of the sensations you feel?
Your hands may still become sweaty, you heart will pound against your rib cage, all of the symptoms are the same. There's only one subtle difference. What ever it is you're about to do, while being on the edge of your comfort zone, you believe you have the capability to handle.
You're not afraid of it.
So next time you're feeling anxious, don't label it as good or bad, just feel the sensations. Feel them, feel them fully. Realise that it's just a sensation and that you're not in any real danger.
Learn to sit with the sensations and not judge them. Then you can stop fearing them. You can stop fearing the fear and instead believe you can handle the sensations of anxiety. You start to find situations you found scary become less scary and as you get better at this and change your focus from trying to not feel the sensations, you may even come to enjoy them.
